General Appearance

The Akita is a large, well-boned, and sturdy dog with a bold presence and calm composure. Its build is slightly longer than tall, with strong muscles and a level back. The breed is double-coated and features a curled tail, erect ears, and a broad head with a full muzzle. Every part of the Akita reflects alertness, dignity, and strength.

    Height: 26–28 inches
    Weight: 100–130 pounds

    Weight: 70–100 pounds

Proportions are balanced, with a body slightly longer than tall.

Coat

  • Type: Double coat

  • Outer coat: Straight, harsh, and somewhat stand-off; never soft or long.

  • Undercoat: Soft, dense, and close-lying.

  • Color: Any color including white, brindle, red, sesame, or pinto. Colors are rich and clear. White Akitas have no mask. Markings are well-defined and symmetrical.

Head

  • Skull: Broad, flat between the ears.

  • Stop: Well-defined.

  • Muzzle: Broad and full, tapering slightly toward the nose.

  • Nose: Large and black (brown allowed in white Akitas).

  • Lips: Black, with tight corners. Tongue is pink.

  • Eyes: Small, dark brown, deeply set, and triangular in shape.

  • Ears: Strongly erect, small relative to the head, triangular, and slightly forward-tilted.

Body

  • Neck: Thick, muscular, and slightly arched, blending smoothly into the shoulders.

  • Chest: Wide and deep with well-sprung ribs.

  • Back: Level and firm.

  • Loin: Muscular and strong.

  • Tail: Large, full, and carried curled over the back or to the side in a three-quarter or full curl.

Legs

  • Forequarters: Straight and heavily boned, with strong pasterns.

  • Hindquarters: Wide and muscular, with well-developed thighs.

  • Stifles: Moderately angulated.

  • Feet: Cat-like, well-knuckled, with thick pads.

Gait

The Akita moves with power and purpose, with a brisk and agile stride. The gait is effortless, with good reach in the front and strong drive from the rear. The topline remains level when moving.

Temperament

  • Dignified and aloof with strangers but deeply affectionate and protective with family.

  • Loyal and courageous, the Akita is a quiet, intelligent dog that doesn’t bark unnecessarily.

  • Dominant and strong-willed, early socialization and firm but respectful training are essential.

  • May show aggression toward other dogs, especially of the same sex.

Faults

  • Cow-hocks, flat feet, light bone, soft coat.

  • Shyness, aggression, or excessive fearfulness.

  • Improper tail set or lack of curl.

  • Ears that are not erect or tails that are not curled.
