General Appearance

The American Staffordshire Terrier is stocky yet graceful, with a compact, powerful frame. It is muscular without being cumbersome and agile without appearing racy. A hallmark of the breed is its confident expression, proud posture, and affectionate demeanor.

 

Size

  • Height:
    Males: 18 to 19 inches
    Females: 17 to 18 inches

  • Weight:
    Proportional to height. Typically 50–70 pounds for males and 40–55 pounds for females.
    Overall balance and correct structure are more important than size alone.

Head

  • Skull: Broad, with well-defined cheek muscles.

  • Muzzle: Medium length, rounded on the upper side, and falling away beneath the eyes.

  • Stop: Distinct.

  • Nose: Always black.

  • Eyes: Dark and round, set low and far apart. Light or pink eyes are faults.

  • Ears: Set high, cropped or uncropped (uncropped preferred), short and held semi-erect or rose.

Body

  • Neck: Heavy, slightly arched, tapering from shoulders to the back of the skull.

  • Shoulders: Strong and muscular with wide sloping blades.

  • Back: Fairly short, slightly sloping from withers to rump, with a slight downward croup.

  • Chest: Deep and broad, with ribs well-sprung.

Tail

  • Short in comparison to size, set low, tapering to a point. Never curled or carried over the back. Not docked.

Legs & Feet

  • Forequarters: Straight, large boned, and set well apart.

  • Hindquarters: Muscular, with well-bent stifles and low-set hocks.

  • Feet: Compact, well-arched, and of medium size.

Coat

  • Type: Short, close, stiff to the touch, and glossy.

  • Color: Any color, solid, parti, or patched. However, dogs that are more than 80% white, black and tan, or liver are discouraged.

Gait

The AmStaff moves with grace and purpose. The gait should be effortless, springy, and powerful, demonstrating strong rear drive and good reach in front. The back remains level while in motion.

Temperament

  • Confident, keen, and intelligent, with a zest for life.

  • Friendly and loving, especially toward family members and children.

  • Alert and courageous, with a steady, stable disposition.

  • Should never be aggressive toward people but may show dog dominance—early socialization is key.

  • Eager to please and highly trainable.

Faults

  • Poor structure or balance

  • Overly aggressive or shy behavior

  • Lack of muscle tone

  • Light eyes

  • Dudley nose

  • Curled or docked tail
