General Appearance

The Dogo Argentino is a well-balanced, harmonious, and powerful molosser-type dog. Its physique reflects its strength, agility, and endurance. The breed is recognized for its solid white coat, imposing presence, and noble expression.

Size and Proportion

  • Height at withers:

    • Males: 24–27 inches (60–68 cm)

    • Females: 23.5–26 inches (60–65 cm)

  • Weight:

    • Males: 88–100 pounds (40–45 kg)

    • Females: 80–95 pounds (36–43 kg)

  • Proportion: The body is slightly longer than tall, with a broad, deep chest and a strong, straight back.

Head

  • Skull: Massive yet proportionate to the body, broad and slightly domed.

  • Stop: Well-defined.

  • Muzzle: Slightly shorter than the skull, strong and deep.

  • Nose: Entirely black with well-opened nostrils.

  • Lips: Tight and firm, black pigment is preferred on the edges.

  • Eyes: Almond-shaped, set well apart. Dark or hazel in color with an intelligent and alert expression.

  • Ears: Set high, traditionally cropped (where legal), erect or semi-erect. Natural ears are medium-sized, drop, and triangular.

Neck, Topline, and Body

  • Neck: Thick, strong, and arched, with some loose skin forming a slight dewlap.

  • Topline: Level and firm, slightly sloping from withers to croup.

  • Back: Broad and muscular.

  • Chest: Deep and wide, reaching to the elbows.

  • Loin: Short and strong, with slight tuck-up.

  • Croup: Broad and muscular with a gentle slope.

  • Tail: Thick at the base, tapering to the tip, reaching the hock. Carried in a saber shape when in motion.

Forequarters

  • Shoulders: Muscular and sloping.

  • Forelegs: Straight and strong with solid bone.

  • Pasterns: Slightly sloped.

  • Feet: Round, compact, with strong, arched toes.

Hindquarters

  • Muscular and well-angulated, in balance with the front.

  • Thighs: Thick and powerful.

  • Hocks: Well let down and straight when viewed from behind.

  • Feet: Compact and well-arched.

Coat

  • Type: Short, smooth, and dense.

  • Length: Approximately 0.6 to 0.8 inches (1.5–2 cm).

  • Texture: Glossy and even across the body.

  • Color: Solid white. A single black or dark spot on the head (usually around one ear or eye) is permissible but not preferred.

Gait / Movement

Effortless, strong, and agile. The Dogo should move with a smooth and balanced stride, demonstrating power and flexibility. The topline remains level while in motion.

Temperament

The Dogo Argentino is courageous, determined, and fearless in the hunt, yet gentle and affectionate with its family. It is naturally protective and territorial but should not be overly aggressive. Socialization and obedience training are essential. It is intelligent, loyal, and thrives under firm, fair leadership.

Faults (to be penalized)

  • Pink nose (partial pigmentation may be acceptable in young dogs)

  • Lack of muscle tone or weak structure

  • Excessive skin or wrinkles

  • Light eyes (yellow or glassy appearance)

  • Overly shy or aggressive behavior

  • Thin or patchy coat

  • Oversized or underdeveloped ears

Disqualifications

  • Total lack of pigmentation in the nose (dudley nose)

  • More than one spot of pigmentation on the head

  • Deafness (unilateral or bilateral)

  • Blue eyes

  • Long or wavy coat

  • Dogs with albinism or lack of breed-typical pigmentation

 

Ideal Owner

The Dogo Argentino is best suited for experienced dog owners who understand working and guardian breeds. The Dogo thrives with regular exercise, mental stimulation, and clear leadership. Not recommended for first-time dog owners or those who cannot provide structured training and socialization.
