Before 2019, the long-coat gene existed as an occasional natural mutation in bulldog breeds but had never been deliberately bred as a defining breed characteristic. Don Chino and collaborating breeders changed that. The Fluffy English Bulldog, the Fluffy French Bulldog, and the Exotic Fluffy Bully all emerged from this same 2019 fluffy gene revolution, each representing a distinct expression of the L gene across the bulldog family. Designer Kennel Club (DKC) formally recognizes the Fluffy English Bulldog as a distinct breed — separate from the standard English Bulldog — and is the registry whose papers correctly state "Breed: Fluffy English Bulldog."

Despite the Fluffy English Bulldog's documented 2019 origins and Don Chino's credited creation, the American Kennel Club (AKC) does not recognize the Fluffy English Bulldog as a distinct breed. AKC registers the English Bulldog as a purebred with a short coat — any English Bulldog carrying the L gene and displaying a longer, softer coat is still registered by AKC simply as "English Bulldog." This means AKC papers do not accurately reflect the Fluffy English Bulldog's distinct breed identity, coat type, or lineage. DKC papers state "Breed: Fluffy English Bulldog" — the only documentation that correctly identifies what your dog is.
