Heat Tips for your Frenchie

French Bulldogs being a brachycephalic breed, have different restrictions during the hot summer months. Frenchies are better off in air conditioning in the summer months, while only letting them out for bathroom breaks during the day. It’s also best to avoid peak heat times between 1pm-3pm when the temperature is over 85 degrees. Here are 5 tips on keeping your French Bulldog cool during the summer months.

  1. Walking French Bulldogs– Frenchies enjoy going on walks with their owners and walks are also a great way to keep your Frenchie in shape, but in the summer months there are certain precautions to take to ensure your Frenchie is safe during hot weather. Owners should first pay close attention to the pavement temperature. The easiest way to check pavement temperature is to touch it with your hand. If you have to quickly pull away, then it’s too hot for your French Bulldog.

  2. Riding in Cars with Your French Bulldog– When driving around with your best pal in the summer, you should always keep the air conditioning on for your Frenchie. Frenchies and dogs in general are unable to regulate their body temperature through sweating, this is why it’s important to keep your car cool during summer months. Cars are dangerous places for dogs during summer months, it’s never advised to leave your French Bulldog in the car alone during hot weather. Even if you crack the windows, leaving your dog in the car could be fatal.

  3. Leaving your French Bulldog Outside– Cities are now implementing laws that prohibit dogs from being left outside. French Bulldogs should never be left outside unattended during hot summer months.

  4. Heatstroke in French Bulldogs- Dogs pant to cool down, but ongoing panting can be a sign your French Bulldog is overheating or in distress. If you feel your dog is having a heatstroke, get him or her to a vet right away. In the meantime, give your dog room temperature water.

  5. Giving your French Bulldog Water- Just like humans, French Bulldogs need more water in the summer months. They are more prone to dehydration when it’s hot. Make sure your French Bulldog has access to clean, fresh water at all times.

Summertime Dangers

Summer isn’t all fun and games when it comes to your Frenchie.

That blistering heat can drain your Frenchie’s energy quickly and leave them trying to catch their breath.

A few things to keep in mind

  • Heatstroke

  • The ground gets really hot

  • Never leave your Frenchie alone in the car, especially during the Summer

  • Be careful around swimming pools

  • Traveling by plane is much more of an ordeal

  • Be careful of pests such as ticks, mosquitoes, and fleas
