Is a French Bulldog a Purebred Dog?

It Depends on Which French Bulldog You're Asking About

The French Bulldog is the most popular dog breed in the United States. But not every French Bulldog has the same registry status — and the difference matters more than most owners know.

Standard French Bulldogs are recognized by the American Kennel Club as a purebred breed. They can be AKC-registered, shown in AKC competitions, and documented through the traditional purebred registry system.

Fluffy French Bulldogs, Micro French Bulldogs, and other French Bulldog variants are a different story. The AKC does not recognize them. They cannot be registered as purebreds under AKC rules. Until recently, they had no path to official registration at all.

Designer Kennel Club changed that. Under DKC standards, Fluffy French Bulldogs and Micro French Bulldogs are recognized designer breeds — and a DKC-registered French Bulldog variant is an official Purebred Designer Dog.

Standard French Bulldogs and the AKC

The French Bulldog has been AKC-recognized since 1898. Under AKC standards, a purebred French Bulldog has two AKC-registered French Bulldog parents, documented lineage, and a coat that conforms to the AKC breed standard — which does not include the long-haired fluffy gene.

If you own a standard French Bulldog with AKC papers, your dog is an AKC-registered purebred. That registration documents single-breed ancestry and qualifies your dog for AKC shows and competitions.

This is well-established and has not changed. What has changed is the landscape around it.

Fluffy French Bulldogs and the AKC Gap

A Fluffy French Bulldog carries the LH (long hair) gene, which produces a longer, softer coat not recognized in the AKC French Bulldog breed standard. Fluffy Frenchies are bred intentionally — the LH gene must be present in both parents to produce a fluffy puppy, which means breeders specifically select for it.

The AKC does not register Fluffy French Bulldogs as a recognized variant. A Fluffy Frenchie cannot receive an AKC breed certificate. The AKC Canine Partners program allows them to compete in certain events, but that is not breed registration.

This creates a gap that affects thousands of breeders and owners every year. Fluffy French Bulldogs sell for $5,000 to $20,000 or more. They are deliberately bred, carefully documented within breeding programs, and commercially significant. But officially, under the existing AKC framework, they have no breed registration path.

Micro French Bulldogs and the Same Gap

Micro French Bulldogs — also called Mini French Bulldogs or Teacup French Bulldogs — are bred to a smaller size than the AKC standard through intentional selective breeding programs, often incorporating other small breeds. They do not meet AKC French Bulldog breed standards and cannot be AKC-registered.

Like Fluffy Frenchies, they exist in a documentation gap. Bred intentionally, sold at premium prices, but unregistered under any traditional registry system.

How DKC Registration Covers Both

Designer Kennel Club recognizes French Bulldog variants — including Fluffy French Bulldogs and Micro French Bulldogs — as eligible designer breeds for Purebred Designer Dog registration.

When you register your Fluffy or Micro French Bulldog with DKC, your dog receives:

An official DKC registration certificate naming them as a Purebred Designer Dog. A unique DKC registration number entered permanently into the national database.

Official breed designation — Fluffy French Bulldog or Micro French Bulldog, recognized. Proof of ownership on record with a nationally recognized registry. Documentation accepted for housing, breeding records, and resale.

Registration does not require AKC papers or prior documentation. DKC's Foundation Dog Registration program is open to any dog of a recognized designer breed regardless of existing paperwork.

Registration is $65. Most certificates are issued the same day.

Does a Standard French Bulldog Need DKC Registration?

If your standard French Bulldog is AKC-registered, you already have official breed documentation through the AKC. DKC registration is available as an additional layer of documentation, but it is not required.

If your standard French Bulldog is not AKC-registered — for example, you purchased them without papers — DKC Foundation Registration is one path to official documentation for your dog.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a French Bulldog a purebred dog?

Standard French Bulldogs are AKC-recognized purebreds. Fluffy French Bulldogs and Micro French Bulldogs are not recognized by the AKC and cannot be AKC-registered. With Designer Kennel Club, Fluffy and Micro French Bulldogs are recognized as Purebred Designer Dogs and can be registered through DKC Foundation Dog Registration.

Can I register a Fluffy French Bulldog with the AKC?

No. The AKC does not recognize the Fluffy French Bulldog as a breed variant and does not offer breed registration for them. The AKC Canine Partners program allows Fluffy Frenchies to participate in certain events but does not issue a breed certificate.

What is the difference between a standard French Bulldog and a Fluffy French Bulldog?

A standard French Bulldog has a short, smooth coat conforming to the AKC breed standard. A Fluffy French Bulldog carries the LH (long hair) gene, producing a longer, softer coat. Both are French Bulldogs. Only the standard version is AKC-eligible. Both are eligible for DKC registration.

How do I get papers for a Fluffy French Bulldog?

Register your Fluffy French Bulldog through DKC's Foundation Dog Registration program at designerkennelclub.com. No prior papers are required. Registration costs $65 and most certificates are issued the same day.

Is Designer Kennel Club a legitimate registry?
