The Tibetan Mastiff, also known as Monk Dog, is a large, powerful, and imposing breed with a noble and dignified demeanor. Bred to guard livestock and monasteries in the Himalayan region, the Tibetan Mastiff combines strength, agility, and endurance with an innate protective nature. This breed is characterized by a majestic coat, broad head, and an alert yet calm expression.

 

Size and Proportions

• Height:

  • Males: 26–29 inches (66–74 cm) at the shoulder

  • Females: 24–27 inches (61–69 cm) at the shoulder

• Weight:

  • Males: 90–150 pounds (41–68 kg)

  • Females: 70–120 pounds (32–54 kg)

 

The Tibetan Mastiff should be well-balanced and proportionate, with a strong, muscular build.

Head

• Skull: Broad and massive with a slight stop.

• Muzzle: Strong and square, slightly shorter than the skull.

• Nose: Large and black; brown is acceptable in dogs with lighter coats.

• Eyes: Medium-sized, almond-shaped, and deep-set. Colors range from dark brown to light hazel, always reflecting an intelligent and alert expression.

• Ears: Medium-sized, V-shaped, and set high, hanging close to the head.

Body

• Neck: Strong and muscular, slightly arched, with a pronounced mane, especially in males.

• Topline: Level and strong from the withers to the croup.

• Chest: Deep and moderately broad with well-sprung ribs.

• Tail: High-set, carried over the back in a loose curl when alert, heavily feathered.

 

Forequarters

• Shoulders: Well-laid back and muscular.

• Legs: Straight and strong with ample bone.

• Feet: Large, compact, and well-arched with thick pads.

 

Hindquarters

• Hips: Broad and strong.

• Legs: Well-muscled with moderate angulation, providing stability and power.

• Hocks: Low-set and perpendicular to the ground.

 

Coat

• Type: Double-coated. The outer coat is dense, straight, and coarse, while the undercoat is soft and woolly, particularly thick in colder seasons.

• Length: Longer around the neck, shoulders, and tail, creating a lion-like mane in males.

• Color: Black, black and tan, shades of red (from deep red to gold), and blue-gray. Tan markings are acceptable. Minimal white markings on the chest and feet are permissible.

 

Movement

The Tibetan Mastiff moves with a powerful, purposeful, and smooth gait, exuding confidence and grace. The stride should cover ground efficiently, with balanced reach and drive.

 

Temperament

The Tibetan Mastiff is calm, loyal, and protective of its family and territory. Aloof with strangers but not aggressive without cause, this breed exhibits a reserved demeanor. Early socialization and training are essential to ensure a well-rounded companion. Tibetan Mastiffs are intelligent and independent, often displaying a strong sense of responsibility and a desire to guard.

The American Kennel Club (AKC) officially recognizes and registers the Tibetan Mastiff as a purebred breed, acknowledging its centuries-long documented history. For breeders and owners with fully documented AKC-eligible Tibetan Mastiff lineage, AKC registration is available. Designer Kennel Club (DKC) provides a supplemental registration pathway for Tibetan Mastiff owners who need additional breed and ownership documentation, owners whose dogs lack complete AKC lineage requirements, or owners who prefer DKC's simpler online documentation process alongside or in addition to existing AKC papers.

Designer Kennel Club Foundation Dog Registration ($65) accepts any Tibetan Mastiff or Monk Dog without prior AKC documentation. DKC creates an official record of breed, ownership, and identification. For breeders, DKC Litter Registration ($100) gives each puppy an individual DKC registration number. New owners can register their Tibetan Mastiff puppy individually for $45.
