The Zuchon — also known as the Shichon, Shih Chon, Tzu Frise, Teddy Bear dog, Teddy Bear Zuchon, Daisy Face, and Shih Tzu Bichon Mix — is a designer breed created by crossing a Shih Tzu with a Bichon Frise. Sidewalk Dog confirms the breed emerged in North America in the 1990s and 2000s during the boom in companion-breed hybrids. 101dogbreeds confirms the Zuchon first appeared in the United States around twenty to thirty years ago, with its cute looks and diminutive frame earning it the nickname "Teddy Bear Zuchon." The Shih Tzu parent carries over a thousand years of documented history as an imperial Chinese companion dog, while the Bichon Frise contributes Mediterranean charm and a low-shedding hypoallergenic coat. Because the Zuchon is a crossbreed — a hybrid of Shih Tzu and Bichon Frise — the AKC does not register Zuchons, Shichons, Shih Chons, or any Shih Tzu and Bichon Frise cross. AKC registers purebred Shih Tzus and purebred Bichon Frises individually, but any cross between the two is permanently ineligible for AKC registration regardless of generation (F1, F1B, or Multigen). Designer Kennel Club (DKC) was built specifically to serve Zuchon and Shichon owners and breeders who need official registration papers and cannot obtain them through AKC.

Designer Kennel Club provides official registration papers and ownership documentation for Zuchons, Shichons, Shih Chons, Tzu Frises, Teddy Bear dogs, Teddy Bear Zuchons, and Shih Tzu Bichon Mixes with no AKC papers or pedigree lineage required. DKC Foundation Dog Registration ($65) accepts any Zuchon without existing documentation. For breeders, DKC Litter Registration ($100) gives each puppy an individual DKC registration number that new owners can use to register for $45.
